DAMASTEEL STAINLESS STEEL DAMASCUS

THICKNESS = 2.2 MM AFTER BOLSTER TRANSITION - 1.8 Mid way
WEIGHT = 257 grms
Brisket/bread sword in Stainless steel Damascus, Buffalo horn, nickel silver and walnut burl.
The materials chosen for this piece are a step away from my usual work and I wanted to explore the possibility of re-ordering the pattern within the steel by upsetting the bar 90 degrees to its original orientation – this would allow the pattern to flow through the blade in a twisted river like configuration.
The blade is initially forged by power hammer to create an integral bolster, whereby a mass of material is isolated during initial forging from the main blade. Hand hammering and a keen eye refine the shape. There is a compound bi-lateral grind through the blade to help with weight distribution and strength and the serrations are cut by hand.
The handle is a muti-faceted, western style with an heirloom fit at the bolster/integral join. I wanted to create something that would feel delightful in a variety of grips and compliment the contorted patterns in the steel. The materials were chosen for their high finish and exquisite patterns; the subtle details in the wood grain are accentuated by the ground facets and curves, whilst the whisps of colouration found in the buffalo horn speak of distant star systems; mini-galaxies in the dark night sky . The fit of the handle allows for perfect balance of such a large blade and an ergonomic fit for many different styles of knife grip
