Paring knife forged in closed dies.

We have a long-standing interest in heavy forging hammers and presses, so when we heard that Mark Keeling had a friction screw press, we knew we wanted to try it out. We put a set of specially made forging dies into our suitcase and jumped on a plane.

The knife is modeled on one of Rich's paring knife designs and relies on large machines to squash the steel into the shape of the handle. Forging a steel we were completely unfamiliar with on a machine we had never used before definitely had its challenges, and a few knives were lost along the way. Just as well we weren't paying for the steel!

Usually, we leave a forged finish on the handles and upper bevels of these designs, but here Rich has ground and polished the facets of the handle before giving the whole thing a nice deep etch to bring out the beautiful loosely twisted pattern.
